With the blessing of His Eminence, Archbishop Kyrill, a “Liturgical Practicum” was convened from 13-17 February 2025 (President’s Day Weekend) in Phoenix, AZ.
Sponsored by the Western American Diocese Liturgical Committe, GreatMartyr Euphemia Orthodox Theological Academy, and All Saints of North America Orthodox Church, the practicum went for 5 solid days.
The first day was a day dedicated to subdiaconal service and training, especially for hierarchical liturgy celebration.
In addition to liturgical praxis, and many informative Q&A sessions following each liturgical service (all of which were livestreamed along with the practicum), there were Academic sessions which covered at a higher level the essence of liturgical celebration.
The keynote speaker was Very Rev. Hieromonk Peter (Karakazoff), who serves at the Old Holy Virgin Cathedral.
The academic sessions covered included a presentation on the Proskomedia (Hieromonk Peter), Preaching/Introduction to Orthodox Homiletics (Fr. John A. Peck), The Anaphora (Fr. John A. Peck), and the Liturgy of the Word (Hieromonk Peter).
The Practicum culminated in a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy served by his grace, Bishop James of Sonora. Bishop James also spearheaded the final discussion and Q&A session on liturgical praxis during hierarchical liturgy.
The recordings of the practicum will be available to practicum participants shortly.
This was the inaugural practicum, which will become an annual event.
Participation in the practicum, and the continuing education programs associated with it, in no way guarantee ordination in the Western American Diocese – ROCOR; however, they do increase the potential of ordination for a candidate. An intense tentative schedule has been devised that includes daily Divine Liturgies and other daily Divine Services; sessions in practical liturgics and rubrics; and two introductory cohorts in theology (New Testament) and liturgical theology. The academic cohorts, via digital means in theology and liturgical theology will continue onwards through the year until the next annual liturgical practicum. The cohorts will conclude in the following practicum, and two new cohorts will be introduced.
